Shelby’s your drill sergeant
Last weekend my husband and 7 of his friends ran the “Tough Mudder” race in Lorain, Ohio. Tough Mudder events are hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test your all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie. And their website claims it’s probably the toughest event on the planet. So of course I had to tag along to take pictures. As I waited at the obstacles with my camera ready, one thing became very apparent. This event was not easy, and there were some folks who were flat-out unprepared. About halfway through the race it became obvious who had trained for Tough Mudder, and who had not.
You see, my husband trained for this event for months. Even when he didn’t feel like it, even when he felt like he was in good enough shape already, even when his friends were watching football on the couch, he trained in the dark, in the rain, and in the snow. And last Saturday, all of the training he had done “in the dark of the morning” was found out on the course, “under the bright lights.”
Like always, this can relate to marriage education. Our workshops are geared toward “training” you and teaching you relationships skills. You might not think you need some of these skills right now, because your marriage is doing “pretty good”, but those skills are there for that dreaded yet inevitable someday. Because we know that someday your marriage is going to hit some valleys, some rough spots, some “mud,” and that’s when your preparation will be found out. We’re here to help train you to withstand the obstacles and push through. So just picture Shelby as your drill sergeant and the workshop as your jumping jacks and push ups.
